I stumbled upon Minecraft, a fantastic little indie game, while scanning the Team Fortress 2 blog a few days ago… and I kid you not, I haven’t played anything else since I started! Let me give you a clear picture of what it’s like. You are a three dimensional 8 bit character in a three dimensional 8 bit world. This world is completely made out of blocks (or cubes) that you can remove and place at your leisure. In the classic version of the game (which is FREE for all to play!), you have no goal, no time limit, instant removal of blocks, and you can’t die. It’s basically just giving you a taste of what the game is all about, though the multiplayer portion of the classic game can be quite fun when you have a fellow creative mind to make something with.
Now in the main version of the game (currently in alpha), you have one main goal… survive! Obviously, now you can die from various AI creatures like skeletons, zombies, and even the ever generic giant spider. These creatures only come out at night, so in order to survive you need to build yourself shelter as quickly as possible using the dirt on the ground, or whatever various materials you find from scavenging about. This is the meat and potato’s of this game, in my opinion… the feeling of being completely alone, and having to go out to collect food and materials to craft weapons and expand your shelter is immensely fun.
For those of you who didn’t feel like reading all my words, I will summarize… Minecraft is truly a gem of a game and is a must have for fans of the sandbox game genre… it practically defines it!
The internet is buzzing about a rumor that the next in the Grand Theft Auto series, Grand Theft Auto V, will be set in the west coast around Los Angeles. This is exciting news seeing as Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was inspired by the LA area. Could this potentially be a San Andreas remake? I’ll let you know as soon as I know.
Red Dead Redemption is my most anticipated sandbox game of 2010, yes even more than Fallout: New Vegas. The idea of Rockstar making a game set in the waning days of the Wild West is incredibly exciting.
Here is a four video Red Dead Redemption expose to help combat the crushing anticipation until its release on April 27th. EDIT: The release date has been pushed back to May 18th!

Halo 3 ODST was released today (finally), and I picked up a copy today on my lunch break… and after a quick look at IGN’s review (9.0), I couldn’t be more excited to play it. I found out that it not only has the full game, but also a bonus disk preloaded with all the Halo 3 map packs, as well as an invite to join in the Halo Reach Beta! So go out and get yourself a copy now!
Now I’ll admit, I don’t own a Playstation 3, but if there was one PS3 exclusive sandbox game that would convince me to buy one, its this. Infamous is a third person action adventure game, where you take control of a new hero, Cole, as he try’s to kick start (No pun intended) the city after it was overrun by gangs and violence while he was in a coma. Plot sound generic? It is… but that doesn’t stop it in any way shape or form from being a truly outstanding game. Take a look at the official review here, and mark your calendars for the May 26th release.
